Brilliant article, dolphins are such intelligent creatures. They have an EQ (how we measure animal intelligence) of well over 5, which means they would outsmart a chimp ten fold, and are probably closer to human intelligence than most of us realise. If a dolphin was commenting here they would probably say something far more interesting

You missed the obvious advice.
Go diving as much as possible - being dive fit helps with everything else.

Also, don't fin hard if you don't need to. Go slow, you'll see a lot more.

Good post Tim, I always dive with my husband and have almost done 200 dives and have just returned from Dahab after completing our Rescue Divers course.

It wasn't until the repeated ditching of weights that I realised how hard his clipped integrated weights would be to pull out of his BCD would be until I had to do it. My Diva XL has much more simple removal.

We always check each other's set up before we dive and this simple check can identify problems before you are in the water - a habit I hope to retain for our entire diving experience.

Keeping a good regular eye on all those you dive with is good practice. You may spot something before it becomes an uncontrollable or panicked situation.

Happy diving!

I have a Scubapro Bella which I bought 2 years ago and have done over 100 dives in. It is hard wearing, extremely comfortable, has integrated weight pockets and plenty of pockets and D rings for your bits and bobs. It has ample lift, all the usual dumps and all the straps are in the right girly places too! I am 5ft and slim so had no option but to buy a ladies fit XXS as all the standard ones felt very uncomfortable and were far to big. I use a 12l dumpy cylinder with this BCD and have never felt pressure on my coccyx despite how short I am. I would always recommend buying ladies fit BCDs, it does make a difference. All the other female members of my club have Mares Kaila BCDs, which they are all very happy with and have recommended to others.

Many thanks to all of you for convincing me NOT to download this POC. While I always download and keep good notes, I have neglected printing out my log for two years (and yes, I am a very active diver) so I thought I'd look for updates before printing and was thrilled to see it was MAC compatible. I thought it'd be wise to read a couple reviews before hand. The best ever review is on the cave diver forum. I was literally LOL here at work. The laser printer is whirring away...only 200 dives to go.

I have been diving for 6 years and learnt with Simply Scuba wearing a Scubapro (male) BCD. I tried several female BCD once qualified and settled on the Tusa Selena. I'm now on my third one and wouldn't change for the world. Even us girls are different shapes so trying several makes is a must. - Purchased from Simply of course

What about the larger, curvier woman? In particular need of a woman's fit but generally forced into a man's fit to allow for size?

I am a newbie and about to do my open water portion of my cert. I just bought a set of gear through the dive shop that I am taking lessons at and was able to test everything in their pool. Of course as a beginner - I don't know what I don't know, but it did make me comfortable with my purchase and the gear before flying to Mexico next week.

I find scuba divers little eco warriors with tin cans on their backs. Very humbling ' we don't take any lobsters' do you think you're going to make a dent in the population with 1000s of creels in the water and few fishermen with your attitude. Go dive and go homne to your wee job and house.
