Beachy Head and the Goodwin Sands amongst others are being proposed as conservation zones designed to protect our coastline and the seas inhabitants in those areas. Some 30 recommendations are being proposed by the Balanced Seas group who specialise in Marine Conservation Zones.
Marine Conservation Zones can be used to stop or reduce fishing and dredging for gravel and sand. As a result local fishermen are disputing the recommendations saying that they are running out of places to fish in the area what with local wind farms and areas which are already protected.
Some of the species and sealife which would be better protected as a result of conservation zones would be rare tentacle lagoon worms, rare species of sea horse, stalked jellyfish, rare seaweeds, chalk and sandstone reefs.
