The Director of Avatar, James Cameron is building a sub that is submersible to 36,000 feet below the seas surface. If the sub does this challenging depth, Cameron could win a $10 million X Prize and shoot for an ‘Avatar’ sequel at the same time.
The story was first reported by The Daily Mail who said the sub would be made from composite materials and would be powered by electric motors. The sub would have to undertake great pressure which is a given at seven miles underwater. This is where the director plans to shoot 3D footage to include into the Avatar sequel.
Once the sub is finished it will be put to the test to explore the Challenger Deep which is a 35,994 foot deep depression at the southern end of the Marina Trench. This spot has only been explored three times being the deepest known spot in the sea. No one has tries a manned descent since the first attempt in the Trieste in 1960.
This wouldn’t be the first time the director has conquered the deep having had to several times for his other films like ‘Titanic’ and ‘Aliens of the Deep.’ It has also been reported that the follow up ‘Avatar’ movie will be set in the fictional Pandora Ocean.
The X Prize foundation is hoping to announce a $10 million award later this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the Trieste’s dive. The winner will have had to fund their sub privately and made two repeated manned descents to Challenger Deep.
