If you enjoy wreck diving or are thinking about going on your first wreck dive, there’s a few things you should always remember to do. The wrecks should be respected as not to cause them any damage or ruin the experience for others.
Know your own limitations – If you need to, make sure you have additional training before you head out on your first wreck dive.
Respect the heritage and loss – Be careful at underwater graves, protect them as you would any memorial or burial ground.
Be careful of the environment – Wreck sites can be very fragile so make sure you fine-tune your buoyancy as not to damage or disturb the site.
Keep Safe – Beware that some wrecks such as military vessels may still contain hazardous materials.
Think of others – Don’t remove anything from the site, take photos. Leave the site as you found it for other divers to enjoy.
Local Laws – Different countries have different laws. Find out and obey local regulations and restrictions where you are.
Respect history and archaeology – Shipwrecks hold clues to our maritime history. If you find a site or an object which you think is of historical importance, don’t take it with you. Leave it, mark its position and let the local authorities know.
